Doctor of the Month - February
Dr. Cheryl G. Murphy O.D., our Doctor of the Month!

Dr. Cheryl G. Murphy O.D., our Doctor of the Month has compassionately cared for patients on Long Island for over 20 years. She is currently an associate at North Shore Optometric Group in Smithtown, NY. She received her Bachelor of Science degree in Biology from the State University of New York at Albany in 2000 and her Doctorate of Optometry degree from SUNY College of Optometry in 2004. During both undergrad and optometry school, she worked as a lab research assistant studying visual development and the brain.Â
While seeing patients, Dr. Murphy makes educating her patients a priority by taking the time to answer their questions about their vision and eye health. She has a strong interest in Dry Eye and Ocular Surface Disease as well as in the co-management of patients after cataract surgery. In 2024, she became one of the first optometrists in New York State to become certified by RxSight to deliver light adjustments and lock-ins on the Light Adjustable Lens intraocular implant.Â
Aside from practicing optometry, Dr. Murphy loves to write! She has been honored with the New York State Optometric Association’s Communications Award for sharing her passion for eye health and vision science with colleagues and the public through her widely published articles. She has served as a Contributing Editor for Review of Optometry and 20/20 magazine. As a freelance science writer, she has been published over 130 times in various optometric trade magazines and online for Huffington Post Science, WebMD and Scientific American magazine. She is currently a candidate for Fellowship in the American Academy of Optometry.Â
When Dr. Murphy isn’t working, she enjoys shopping, doing yoga and going for walks with her dog Hudson. In the summer months, you can find her boating with her husband and their triplets.
Why PRN Vision?
“As far as PRN products go I’d say being a dry eye specialist I love to talk to patients about meibomian gland dysfunction since over 80% of patients with dry eye also have MGD. Implementing warm compresses and minimizing bacteria as a part of a patient’s daily routine are functional interventions for dry eye patients to get to the root of some of the possible contributing factors to their dryness and correct them instead of just masking symptoms. To achieve this I recommend Eye Love’s Heyedrate Lid and Lash Cleanser (a refreshing hypochlorous acid spray to spritz on your lashes once daily to keep them healthy clean and free of bacteria) and Eye Love’s Reusable Warm Compress mask with plush, velvety cover that is removable and washable.”
